COBDEN’S A grade netballers handed ladder leaders South Warrnambool their first loss for the season last weekend.

The Bombers showed they are true contenders for the 2022 flag when they defeated the Roosters 50-45 on their home court.

Going into round 10 undefeated, the Roosters were challenged all over the court by the fast-paced Bombers who were keen to reverse the round one deficit.

And in an extra twist to the special victory, coach Sophie Hinkley watched on and gave direction to her team from home.

“I was home with Covid on the weekend but we live streamed the game through our private Facebook page and I was able to coach via that,” she said.

“The livestream enabled me to make changes at each quarter and coach from home which is pretty amazing really.”

Hinkley said her side was “absolutely thrilled” to take the four points from the previously undefeated Roosters, giving them a level of self-belief and confidence that will hold them in good stead in the race to the finals.

“From our round one 12 goal defeat we knew what needed to be done to take the win this time and the girls did exactly what was needed,” she said.

“I could not have been any prouder of them all. We are fortunate to have great depth among our playing group which enables us to fill spots when injuries and illnesses arise.”

Unavailability on the weekend allowed Bec Dendle to take the court for half a game in centre and junior player Lara Taylor to also shine.

“Both Bec and Lara played well, as did Susan Moroney who was strong in defence, Em Finch was terrific in the goal circle in what was only her second game back after injury and Remeny McCann was a standout with 13 turnovers.”

Hinkley believes last weekend’s victory will give her side a confidence booster leading into finals and they will now focus on holding on to third spot.

“We’re very happy with our percentage at the moment so now we need to make sure we hold on to the four points each week.”

The Bombers will face sixth place Portland in a twilight match this weekend.
