Cobden hosts joint Anzac service
COBDEN Technical School, in partnership with Cobden Cemetery Trust, successfully hosted their annual Anzac Day ceremony on Wednesday, April 22 to a large crowd of onlookers from the community.
The event was well attended and represented the Cobden community’s ongoing commitment to recognising returned soldiers of war, raising over 100 flags on gravestones in commemoration of their dedication to serving their country.
Cobden Technical School teacher and service organiser Jen McLennan said she was pleased with the turn out.
“I was really happy with how well-attended the service was,” she said.
“We had lots of different members of the community and the three schools – Cobden Technical School, Cobden Primary School and Hampden P-12.
“It’s great to see everyone involved.
“The number of flags has increased this year as well, which is lovely to see.”
Mrs McLennan said Cobden Technical School had been involved with the memorial service for six years.
“We’ve been involved from the very start,” she said.
“This was organised with Andrea Stotta six years ago in conjunction with the Cemetery Trust, so we’ve been very closely involved from the get-go.
“I’m really pleased to see everyone here.
“It’s a really special event in our calendar, and it’s always lovely to see everyone attend and to see a very tangible view of the members of the Cobden community who have served over the years.”
Cobden Cemetery Trust treasurer Neville Robertson said the memorial service was “fantastic”.
“It’s good for the community and for everyone to come around for a special day,” he said.
“Thank you to the Cobden Technical School, Cobden Primary School and the whole Cobden community.”
Cobden Technical School captains Zoe Buck and Adam Jopling did a reading of Leon Gellert’s ‘Anzac Cove’.
Camperdown Returned and Services League (RSL) vice president Randy Walton presented a speech about the 75th anniversary of the National Service scheme and the importance of service in the community outside of military service.
Community members and organisations were invited to lay a wreath in honour of soldiers who had served Australia and New Zealand in wars and peacekeeping operations.
