Cobden Story comes together
STAGE two of the Cobden Story project has been shared with locals and visitors after its initial progress was hampered by the St Patrick’s Day fires and COVID.
More settled times has seen another 65 new storyboards being mounted on frames and walls along the town’s walking trails.
“It has been a long haul, but the assistance and patience of many people has seen us reach the finishing line,” project co-ordinator Kelvin White said.
“Not that the stories are over. There are still many more to tell.
“We have learned there is a story on every corner you turn, every page you turn.”
The Progressing Cobden project now includes a total of 80 plaques containing historical aspects of the district since the 1840s when Dr Daniel Curdie settled at Tandarook.
Storyboard topics include town organisations and businesses, local government, sporting and service clubs, indigenous history and health and education entities, as well as individuals who have contributed to the wider community in a multitude of ways.
“Highlights include a gallery of sport on the back of the recreation reserve scoreboard, an introduction to the story on the Ritchies IGA front wall and the formal naming of the Circuite de Savage walking track,” Mr White said.
Stage one of the project - which produced 15 storyboards was completed in 2016, with stage two getting under way in 2018.
The Cobden Story project was funded by the Public Records Office (Victorian Government) and the Corangamite Shire (as part of Progressing Cobden’s Twenty20 Vision community plan).
