Cockatoos, Tigers handed defeats
COBDEN selector Nick Kemp has conceded his side “lacked an edge” in its Corangamite Bowls loss to Lorne on Saturday.

COBDEN selector Nick Kemp has conceded his side “lacked an edge” in its Corangamite Bowls loss to Lorne on Saturday.
The Cockatoos suffered a 97-88 loss to the Dolphins on home turf, just seven days after recording a two shot win over Colac (2).
But Kemp conceded the Dolphins came to play for the contest and rightfully ran away with the points after they toppled reigning premiers Colac (1) in the opening round.
“You don’t want to lose at home but we knew it would be a tough game given Lorne had beaten Colac (1) the week before,” he said.
“They have a new recruit in Leigh McIlvenny back, he’s played some state bowls and they were up and about and have a young side.
“It was disappointing not to get the job done.”
Lorne skippers Peter Jacobs, Brad Weetman and Leigh McIlvenny defeated Darren Mulgrew (27-23), Colin Hammond (21-14) and Damian Riches (31-25), while Kemp claimed two points for Cobden with a 26-18 win over Harley Davies.
Kemp said Lorne produced a strong all-round effort in the win, which left Cobden searching for answers at stages.
“They just outbowled us,” he said.
“All their leaders across the board were good and their rinks seem pretty settled.
“We’re pretty happy with our rinks but they just had a little bit of an edge and got on top of us.”
The Cockatoos will now have up to 14 days of preparation for its next clash, which is a trip to Colac to play grand finalists Colac City.
“It’s a big match for us,” Kemp said.
“We knew at the start of the year we’d have a few tough ones to start off.
“They’re one of the premier sides of the competition, they’ve played finals the last 10 years if not even longer.
“If we can go down there and win hopefully it will get us on a bit of a roll and we can try to win a few more games before Christmas.”
Simpson, meanwhile, also suffered its first defeat of the season.
The Tigers went down to Colac Central 106-82, with the Hornets winning three rinks of play.
Hornets skippers Ron Chapman, Ian Johnson and Chris Pearson recorded wins over Peter Inglis (28-18), Leigh Mahoney (28-15) and Rob Methven (26-24), while Brian Clark salvaged two points for Simpson with a 25-24 win over Ricky Finn.
Inglis said the Tigers were disappointed to cough up the points having been in front throughout the contest.
“We had an early lead that we gave up so it was disappointing,” he said.
“It could have set up our season winning two in a row.
“You have to win a few of your away games as well as your ones at home so it’s a pretty big consequence having had a slight lead early.”
Inglis’ conceded a lapse in concentration and a momentum swing ultimately saw the Tigers surrender its early lead.
“It was a bit of both there,” he said.
“We were well up on one rink and everyone probably watched that and concentrated on that and then Central pegged us back and got their tails up and went from there.”
“They played well and were coming off a good win against Camperdown at Camperdown and will be a side to be reckoned with that’s for sure.
“They were just more consistent and handled the wind and the conditions a lot better.”
In the other matches, Colac (2) recorded its first win of the season with a 111-92 triumph over Camperdown, Camperdown Golf opened its account with a 91-73 victory over Winchelsea and Colac (1) won the grand final rematch with Colac City 102-84.
