Colac golfers win Robbie Burns Shield

TO coincide with last weekend’s Robbie Burns Festival, Camperdown Golf Club hosted its annual ambrose competition on Sunday.

Once again the event proved a popular one, attracting 100 players from across the district who formed 25 teams.

Keeping with tradition, the field was led out by celebrated local piper, Dr John Menzies.

Fortunately the Scottish mist cleared early and players enjoyed sunny but chilly conditions – heartened by the free nip of whisky or port on the ninth hole.

The coveted Robbie Burns Shield was won by a Colac team with a net score of 56.8.

Travis White, Caleb Perry, Ben Allen and Luke Vickers were a last minute entry who provide to be an excellent combination, producing an outstanding round.

Winners of the best scratch score of 63 was another Colac team, comprising Paul Hanson, David Walker, Mark Ritchie and Wayne Drayton.

The runners-up in the handicap division, with a net score of 59.1, was Camperdown’s Jesse Horan and his friends from Mortlake, Sam Gervasoni, Charles Kenny and Tyler Schafer.

The best mixed team handicap score of net 61.1 was won by Simon and Tracey Baker with their guests Deiter McDonald and Janet Fitzgerald.

Nearest the pins: 2nd David Fenn (Birregurra), 9th golden hole Mick Kavenagh (Camperdown) $194, 15th number 1 Phil Beasley (Terang) and number 2 Josh Lucas (Warrnambool), 17th Paul Hanson (Colac).

The longest putt on the 8th was Ricky Carr (men) and Jen Burrows (ladies).

The straightest drive on the 18th was Dave Absolom.

Best dressed went to Andrew Narik and Ross McIlveen.
