Colin and Vera Scouller celebrates milestone
COBDEN couple Colin and Vera Scouller celebrated a special milestone last week – 65 years of marriage.

COBDEN couple Colin and Vera Scouller celebrated a special milestone last week – 65 years of marriage.
The pair’s relationship began in 1952 when Colin asked Vera to dance on her 17th birthday.
She described it as “love at first sight” and two years later Colin proposed on her 19th birthday.
The Scouller’s said their wedding vows on July 21, 1956 at St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Camperdown before family and friends.
Frank Duffy and Pat Scouller made up the bridal party on the day.
Originally from Curdievale, Vera moved to Cobden where the couple have spent their lives together.
Vera gained work at the Cobden telegram exchange while Colin worked at Cobden milk factory – now known as Fonterra – for 38 years.
While COVID lockdown restrictions meant the pair could not celebrate their sapphire wedding anniversary last week, they spent the day together at home.
“We were just going to go out somewhere and have lunch, but we’re still waiting,” Vera said.
When asked about the secret to a long and happy marriage, the couple said communication was a key factor.
“The secret is just going along together and taking what comes,” Vera said.
“We’ve always stuck by each other.”
Despite the lockdown the couple said they had been inundated with phone calls wishing them well for their anniversary.
“I’ve been having phone calls from folk I haven’t seen since primary school years and I thank everyone for their support,” Vera said.
“Thank you to all our well wishers.”
The couple has six children – two girls and four boys.
