GIVING artists a platform to share their creations with the wider community has seen the launch of Terang’s first tiny art gallery.

Rusty Spanner Studio owner Chelsea Pope wanted to create an exhibition where often-overlooked artistic creations could be seen.

“I find, as an artist, that if you make small things it can be hard to exhibit the art in a visible way,” she said.

“I was talking to another artist and we were talking about what is an art space.

“I combined the two ideas together, and thought; could a refurbished kitchen cabinet be an art space?”

“I repurposed an old cabinet, painted the insides white and put some lights in, and thought that could be a tiny art gallery.”

The tiny art gallery will feature a rotation of artists each month, giving visitors to the studio a glimpse at something new while helping to showcase the broader range of talent the region has to offer.

“Initially I had a few artists in mind; beginning with some who are friends so they could be my guinea pigs in launching the concept,” Ms Pope said.

“In the future I want artists to come in and utilise the space.

“I’ve already spoken to a few artists about bookings for next month, and in November there are some girls who want to utilise the whole cabinet for their exhibition.”

Ms Pope said creating a space for artists to support each other was at the heart of the project.

“I think we all need to support each other as much as we can,” she said.

“I’m not taking commission money from the artists, I just think it’s a good way to get local artists more recognised.”

The tiny art gallery launched over the weekend with its first assortment of exhibiting artists displaying their work.

The first artists to showcase their work was Cobden potter Chris Inglis and painter Jackie Nowell, Childers Cove silversmith Sarah Vickers and Glenormiston painter Jess Fowler.

“I’m very happy with how many people came in, opening and closing the doors and drawers to see what was inside,” Ms Pope said.

“There has been a really positive response from the community.”
