‘Come and Explore’ mount reserves
THE Mt Leura and Mt Sugarloaf Management Committee’s beloved Come and Explore event is returning next week.
The free family-friendly event will run from 1pm-4.30pm on Sunday, September 21.
Committee chairperson Caroline Duynhoven said the event aims to encourage residents to discover the beauty and heritage of the two mountain reserves.
“This event is a great way for families and nature lovers to experience the reserves and learn more about their cultural and natural significance,” she said.
“The day is about connecting people to the unique volcanic landscape.”
Kicking off the afternoon is Friends of Mt Leura surplus Indigenous plant sale – a chance to take home a piece of local flora and support native biodiversity.
Committee member Graham Arkinstall said one of the highlights will be the cultural discovery walk led by Brett Clarke, which will provide insights into the cultural significance of the area for First Nations people.
“This unique walk promises to be a powerful experience,” he said.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to hear stories that deepen our understanding of the land we live on.”
Families can also enjoy nature crafts, giving kids a chance to get creative with natural materials.
There will be an interactive iNaturalist scavenger hunt – an engaging way to explore the reserves and record local plants and wildlife using a smartphone or tablet.
Adding an artistic touch to the day, textile artist Nicky Schonkala presents Petyan Yarns, a vibrant textile installation which transforms the Volcanic Education Centre and its surrounds into a celebration of Petyan – the local Indigenous season of wildflowers.
Inspired by the colour of lilies, orchids, yam daisies, banksias and wattles, the knitted works honour First Nations knowledge and connection to place.
