MORE than 100 people turned out to celebrate 22 years of community ownership of Mount Elephant over the weekend.
Mount Elephant Community Management Inc group member Lesley Brown said the open day on Sunday went well with about 130people visiting over the course of the day.
“Everyone was very excited about theopening of the new base track, and that it is 22 years since the community purchased the Mount,” she said.
“Everyone enjoyed the barbecue lunch and commented on the many changes on the Mount including the many trees that have been planted, wildlife, walking tracks, visitor centre and the quality of the pasture now that the rabbits and weeds are under control.”
Regular walkers of the track Charlotte and Lexie Henderson cut the ribbon to officially open the base track.
Mrs Brown said 22 years ago Mount Elephant came up for sale and the community, along with Trust for Nature, made the decision to purchase it.
“When we took over there was nothing there, no seats, trees or walking tracks,” she said.
“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved.”
Mrs Brown said about 12 members had been involved in the regeneration of Mount Elephant, with school groups and working bees also helping to complete works over the years
