The community house is serving as a drop-off zone for residents in Camperdown and surrounds to donate to Skipton, with goods to be distributed to those in need by Skipton’s Food Bank.

Camperdown and District Community House coordinator Emily Mercer said the cleaning supplies will be needed over coming days and weeks to assist with clean-up efforts for affected houses.

Other essentials being called for include shovels, sunscreen, first aid supplies and hose pipes.

“If people are able to donate things such as cleaning agents, cloths, mops, buckets, heavy duty gloves and the like, it would be really useful,” Ms Mercer said.

“We can receive donations from people here at the community house – we are going out there at least twice a week to take things from here to Skipton.

“We’ll be seeing a lot more of the external supports coming in now, and with the relief centre that has been set up, the shire has a lot of resources and information available to the community.

“We’ve been getting a great deal of support from Food Bank Victoria – for the time being, food items have been taken care of through that.

“Western District Food Share is also waiting in the wings to support the community in any way they can as well.”

Ms Mercer said she has been thrilled to see the support Skipton was receiving following the fires.

“I’ve witnessed an incredible community response by the Skipton community themselves,” she said.

“The team at the Skipton Food Bank, who we auspice, usually have seven regular ongoing volunteers – that number has risen to over 50 people who have put their hands up since the fire.

“They’ve got a really coordinated, efficient and professional effort being made on the ground to support all of those directly impacted.

“As the days and weeks progress, we’ll be seeing a lot more of those support mechanisms coming into play, which I think is amazing and hope will give some sort of reassurance to the Skipton community.

“Given that recovery after an incident like this is quite dynamic and changeable, needs can change quite quickly.”
