THE Simpson and district community is in mourning after a body was located in Glenfyne on Friday morning.

The grim find followed an extensive search for Simpson’s Nina Barake, 20, who was reported missing after failing to arrive at work last Wednesday morning.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the discovery of the woman’s body in Glenfyne on Friday morning, according to a Police Media spokesperson.

“The body was located inside a vehicle by Search and Rescue officers in flood waters off Maddens Bridge Road about 10.40am,” the spokesperson said.

“While the body is yet to be formally identified, police believe it is that of missing woman Nina, who went missing from Simpson on Wednesday.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the woman’s death are yet to be determined but police are not treating it as suspicious.”

Ms Barake left her Simpson address about 8.20am Wednesday and was expected to arrive at her workplace in Glenfyne about 30minutes later.

Local police, along with Victorian State Emergency Services volunteers, launched a widespread search in the Simpson and Glenfyne areas last Thursday.

A handful of local residents also searched for signs of Ms Barake, including launching a canoe at the Maddens Bridge Road floodway on Thursday afternoon.

Search helicopters were also used on Thursday afternoon to attempt to locate the missing local.

The devastating news on Friday was met with an outpouring of grief from the wider community.

Corangamite Shire mayor Ruth Gstrein offered her condolences on behalf of the shire.

“Corangamite Shire Council would like to offer our condolences to the family and friends of Nina from Simpson following her tragic passing,” she said.

“Our thoughts are with the whole community during this difficult time.”
