WAR veterans buried at the Cobden Cemetery will be honoured during a community service in the lead up to Anzac Day next month.

More than 80 war veterans’ final resting places will be recognised during the initiative which saw Australian flags temporarily placed besides graves on Monday.

The project, which will culminate with a community ceremony at the cemetery, is a joint effort between Cobden Technical School and Cobden Cemetery Trust.

This year Cobden Primary School and Hampden Specialist School will also take part in the initiative.

Cobden Technical School’s Andrea Stoddart said this is third year the school has led the initiative.

She said the service would be held on Thursday, April 6 at 11.30am and would run for about 30 minutes.

Ms Stoddart said the flag raising service was scheduled for Monday, April 3.

“This year there will be than 80 flags,” she said.

“It’s great to see how its grown.

“It’s wonderful to have the Hampden Specialist School joining us this year.”

Ms Stoddart said she was looking forward to the service.

“It’s lovely that it’s now so entrenched in the community,” she said.

“We continue to grow in the numbers we recognise as well.

“We invite the community to attend the service. It will also be livestreamed on the school’s Facebook page.”

Cobden Cemetery Trust secretary Jo Beard said the community has continued to get behind the initiative.

“It’s incredible how much the local community and the broader community have got behind it and are acknowledging family members,” she said.

“It’s grown so much. There’s something very special about it.

“We continue to learn more and more about people in our community that have contributed in such a large way.”

Mrs Beard encouraged the broader community to attend the service and experience the day with the local schools.

“As a Trust, we’re proud to partner with the three schools and we are forever grateful to Cobden Technical School for instigating the initiative with us,” she said.

“It really is a special occasion.”
