Community leadership series to commence

SPORTING clubs, show societies, pool and hall committees and volunteer organisations do great work in the community, but even at the grass roots the right legal and procedural boxes need to be ticked.

Aspiring and experienced community leaders in Corangamite Shire are invited to attend the next instalment in the community leadership series – Governance 101.

Council coordinator community development and engagement Bec Reedman encouraged volunteers to come to an upcoming workshop.

“The free workshop is designed to strengthen

the governance capabilities of local organisations and community groups,” she said.

“Participants will gain practical insights into the legal obligations incorporated bodies and the rights, roles and responsibilities of members, committee members and office bearers.

“We will also help you understand model rules, which are a basic template for your association’s constitution to make sure you comply with legal requirements.

“Committee structures, the roles of committee members, voting procedures, conflict resolution and democratic processes are all governed by your constitution so it’s important you know where to find them and how to apply them.”

Ms Reedman said attendees will also have access to a range of useful templates and resources to support effective governance.

“Whether you’re new to committee work, considering volunteering or have years of experience, this workshop offers a valuable opportunity to refresh and expand your governance knowledge,” she said.

The workshop will be held on Tuesday, September 16 from 3-4pm at the Killara Centre (210-212 Manifold Street, Camperdown).

“If you can’t make the workshop but you or your committee are interested, please contact council and we can work out another time or location,” Ms Reedman said.
