JAXSON Church raised more than $2000 before cutting his lengthy locks in the name of two worthy causes over the weekend.

The Terang local had been growing out his hair for a few years but recently decided to part ways with his signature mane and make a fresh start with short hair.

With the support of his parents, Jaxson took the opportunity to throw his support behind two worthy causes.

His freshly cut hair will be donated to Wigs for Kids; a not-for-profit initiative which makes free-of-charge wigs for children suffering from medical conditions causing the loss of hair.

In addition to the donation of the hair, the 11-year-old also created a fundraiser to support local mental health initiative Surviving the Dark Times.

Feeling his hair short for the first time in years, Jaxson acknowledged his head felt a lot lighter.

“It feels great to have raised the money,” Jaxson said.

“It is double what I wanted to raise.

“Thank you to everyone who donated.”

Jaxson was surrounded by family on Sunday at Terang Style Studio, with his online fundraiser ticking over $1000 just as his hair was placed in to five neat plaits and snipped.

The plaits were sealed in zip-lock bags and will be sent off to Wigs for Kids to help improve the lives of those doing it tough.

Jaxson’s mum Jes said she was proud to have seen her son wanting to do something to make a difference to the lives of those in need.

“We’ve very proud of him,” she said.

“He’s done well, doing all the work himself and tracking the progress and checking on the donation tins in shops throughout town.

“He’s been very excited.”

On the day he was joined by Surviving the Dark Times co-founder Lizz Kelly.

She and fellow co-founder Sheryn McDowell are studying a Certificate IV in Mental Health with the goal of opening a judgement-free mental health community hub in Terang.

Ms Kelly, who has known Jaxson for most of his life, said she was proud to see his maturity in doing something bigger than himself.

“I’m absolutely amazed, and super proud of him,” Ms Kelly said.

“He’s a shy kid so to do this and support these causes is just amazing.”

There is still time to throw your support behind Jaxson’s fundraising initiative.
