THOSE who gave their lives on the battlefield of war were honoured last Friday at Remembrance Day services across the region.

Wreaths were laid at district memorials with students, council representatives, emergency services and members of the community braving the elements to pay their respects.

More than 40 members of the community were in attendance at the Terang Remembrance Day service.

Terang Returned and Services League sub-branch president Terry Fidge said it was “great” to see so many people there on the day.

“It was 104 years ago we marked the end of World War One,” he said.

“After four years the guns had finally been silenced, leaving carnage and a loss of human life which had never been seen before.

“An estimated 18 million lost their lives.

“Australia had a population estimated at five million, and at that time 418,000 enlisted to join the forces. Of those, 60,000 lost their lives – never to be returned home – and 156,000 were wounded.”

Lest we forget.
