COBDEN remains in the top five of the Hampden League ladder following a strong win over the Hamilton Kangaroos last weekend.

The Bombers, sitting fifth just percentage above Port Fairy, enjoyed a comfortable 56-point win in front of their home crowd on Saturday.

The Bombers got an early jump on the visitors, kicking six goals four to 1.2 in the opening term and extended their lead in the second to go into the half-time break 52 points up.

A relatively even third quarter saw the Bombers kick three majors while the visitors added two to the board.

The final term saw the Bombers run home victors, 17.14.116 to Hamilton 9.6.60.

Brody Mahoney, Jack Hammond, Sam Thow, Grady Rooke, Paul Pekin and Zac Green were named best for the Bombers while Pekin kicked five, Mahoney added three and Ben Berry, Jack Hammond and Michael Koroneos kicked two apiece.

Jordan Fowler, Henry Robertson and Rooke also kicked one each.

Bombers coach Dan Casey praised his side, saying he was proud of its consistent efforts over the four quarters.

“With how the league is this season, how close the teams are, we really need to play four quarters of good footy to get the win and that’s what we did on Saturday,” he said.

“Apart from the last 15 minutes of the final quarter when we lost abit of momentum, I thought we really hit the ball well and were able to run.

“Despite the wind, the conditions were good. We were coming off a loss to Koroit in the mud so to get back on the winners’ list was a credit to them all.”

The Bombers found themselves down to two on the bench in the second half following injuries to Ben Berry (foot) and Louis Robertson (ankle) but both were expected to return after this weekend’s bye.

“Ben and Louis should both be right after the bye and we should also hopefully have Jesse Williamson back, and Ryleigh McVilly (who broke his leg last year) just played his third game in the

reserves so he will be up for contention too,” Casey said.

“We face Terang Mortlake after the bye so that will be a good test for us. We’re up for the challenge and looking forward to getting a few more wins on the board in the lead up to finals.”

Cobden’s reserves remain top of their table, with only percentage separating them from South Warrnambool and Warrnambool.

The Bombers enjoyed a 66-point win over the Kangaroos on the weekend, finishing on 10.18.78 to 2.0.12.

Best for the home side were Lachie Davis, Sam Darcy, Bradley Gillingham, Louis Cahill and Joshua Hickey.

Harry Darcy and Davis each contributed two goals, while Cahill, Matt Clarke, Sam Darcy, Brenton Flemming, Joe Hutt and Nicholas Kemp each contributed one apiece.

Cobden’s under 18.5s sit just one game outside the top five after last weekend’s 60-point win over Hamilton, 11.12.78 to 2.6.18.

Best for the Bombers were Blake Mottram, Angus Molan, Noah Penry, Jordan Beard, Gus Walsh and Noah Sinnott.

Mottram and Sinnott both contributed two goals while Jayden Gass, Benjamin McGlade, Safari McVilly, Isaac McVilly and Penry kicked one goal each.
