Contract awarded for new shared use path

CORANGAMITE Shire Council has awarded a contract to install a shared user path in Camperdown at last Tuesday’s Ordinary meeting of Council, with works set to start soon.

The path will be constructed along the northern side Park Lane from Bowen Street to the Lakes and Craters Caravan Park entrance.

The contract, worth $538,770.10, was awarded to Brendan Simmonds Concrete who will install the 1.6km by two-metre path.

The shared user path will be fully funded by the TAC’s (Transport Accident Commission) Safer Local Roads and Streets Program.

Councillor Ruth Gstrein said the project has been at the forefront of residents’ minds during her time on council, and Tuesday was a “very exciting day” for the project.

“A shared path from Bowen Street to the caravan park will be so well-used as are the other walking tracks around the shire,” she said.

“This is absolutely fantastic. It’s been in the pipeline for a number of years, and it was highlighted again by submissions to the budget a couple of years ago and that’s why it’s been elevated.

“Big thanks to the TAC for fully funding this path, and I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of walkers out there as well as cyclists who might use it as a link to the Camperdown Cobden Rail Trail in a safer way.”

Cr Laurie Hickey seconded the motion, saying it would help to improve safety on Park Lane.

“The safety aspect of it – using cars on a narrow road, particularly when the road is elevated, and the setting sun can be a distraction to some of the drivers,” he said.

“It has been quite a dangerous road, and that’s why it’s fitting that the TAC Local Roads and Streets program are the sole funders of this, so we thank them very much for the money and we look forward to the footpath being completed.”

Works are planned to commence next month, and are expected to be completed by Saturday May 31.
