Council calls for cat desexing

ELIGIBLE concession card holders in the Corangamite Shire can save money getting their cats desexed, microchipped and their first year of registration for free.

Program extended: Corangamite cat owners with concession cards could be eligible for cheaper car desexing and microchipping.

A Corangamite Shire Council program has been extended at participating vet clinics in Corangamite Shire, which includes the Terang Veterinary Clinic (20 Estcourt Street, Terang – contact 5592 2111), the Hampden Veterinary Clinic (22 Curdie Street, Cobden – contact 5595 1100), Camperdown Veterinary Centre (1 Leura Street, Camperdown – contact 5593 1077) and The Vet Group (99 Bailey Street, Timboon – contact 5558 6666).

Council local laws officer Jasmine Pugh encouraged eligible cat owners to make the most of the offer.

“Desexing your cat can help reduce unwanted litters and the number of feral cats across the shire,” she said.

“Microchipping means if your cat does go wandering, we can reunite you straight away rather than impounding them which causes distress and might cost you in fees or fines.”

To be eligible, householders must have a concession card, be a Corangamite resident and their cat must be microchipped and registered or be willing to have their pet microchipped and registered at the time of desexing.

Any additional veterinary costs outside the desexing/microchipping services (such as vaccinations) are not covered and must be paid by the owner.

For further information and to apply, go to corangamite.vic.gov.au/cat, call the local laws team on 5593 7100 or drop into the Civic Centre at 181 Manifold Street, Camperdown.

The cat desexing program is supported by the Victorian Government and open until February 2026 or until funding runs out.
