Council endorses top election priorities
COUNCIL has put a focus on three infrastructure projects and one policy change ahead of the State Election.
Councillors voted at the June Ordinary Meeting of Council to endorse a number of priorities to seek funding commitments from all sides of political parties.
Mayor councillor Kate Makin said the November Election is a key opportunity for council to secure targeted investment.
“Council will take our case to MPs, candidates and other stakeholders to maximise the likelihood of securing commitments,” she said.
“We are focussing on a small number of asks that we are confident we can deliver, and that match the government’s priorities.
“The groundwork has been done and staged plans mean we can get the ball rolling with more manageable investments.”
Infrastructure project funding asks include $2.6 million to go towards the first stage of work for the Skipton Community and Recreation Hub, $2.78 million to complete stages one and two of the Camperdown Production Precinct and $750,000 for planning a Port Campbell to Princetown trail.
Cr Makin said council is also seeking policy reform for planning and renewable energy.
“The January fires showed how urgently Skipton needs its community hub to be brought up to scratch for community safety and wellbeing,” she said.
“The Camperdown Production Precinct is a huge development opportunity to benefit our agriculture and food production industries.
“Along with planning reform to protect our prime farmland from haphazard renewable energy developments, these four simple and well-founded commitments will benefit every part of our shire, from north to south.”
Cr Makin said council would continue advocating on its other priorities through regular channels and partnerships, particularly where there is stronger regional alignment.
“Zeroing in on this small number of topics in this campaign doesn’t mean we are overlooking the other issues that are important to council and the community,” she said.
“Council will continue advocating on local issues, regionally with the South West Victoria Alliance and at sector level with Rural Councils Victoria and the Municipal Association of Victoria.”
