Country Week for golfers
WESTERN District Golf Association members recently competed in Country Week.
The men’s team played in division two, known as the Plate division, at the Mildura Golf Club on day one of the event.
The first morning match was against South Gippsland, who defeated WDGA 5-2.
Josh Brown lost to I Batty 3-2, Tony Filipovic lost to C Buckland 3-2 and Lachlan Walker lost to J Krayer 3-2.
Fred Beasley won 2 Up against S Bromby, George Beasley lost to J Jacobson 4-3.
Paul Walker lost to L Perkins 2 Up and Phil Beasley defeated M Thomas 5-4.
In the afternoon, the team played North East and was again defeated, 4-3.
Lachlan Walker lost to Ty Murray 3-2, Fred Beasley defeated Dylan Poole 6-5 and George Beasley won 1 Up against Daniel Lee.
Josh Brown defeated Casey Gamble 5-4, Phil Beasley lost to Vaughan Saunders 1-2, Paul Walker lost to Peter Miller 1-2 and Leo Beasley lost to Darren Edwards 2 Up.
Tuesday’s afternoon match was played at Redcliffs Golf Club against Golf Central.
Western won this match, 4-3.
Josh Brown defeated M Halkamp 3-1, Lachlan Walker was square against J Wallace and Fred Beasley won 1 Up over F Anderson.
George Beasley was square with A Aston, Phil Beasley lost to C Boyd 4-5, Paul Walker lost to C Rea 1-2 and Tony Filipovic defeated R Prendergast 4-2.
The following day’s match was played at Riverside Golf Club against Dalhousie District and Western won the match, 5-2.
Josh Brown defeated E Carracher 4-3, Fred Beasley defeated C Pascoe 2-1 and Lachlan Walker lost to M Mills 1 Up.
George Beasley defeated D Payne 6-4, Paul Walker defeated M Hassal 6-5, Tony Filipovic defeated G Edwards 2-1 and Leo Beasley lost to D Doyle 1-2.
The team finished third on the ladder with two wins and two losses and will remain in the Plate division next year.
The most valuable player was Fred Beasley who won all four matches.
Fred was presented with the Peter Roughana Medal by last year’s winner, Lachlan Walker.
Special mention to Josh Brown who filled in at the last minute when Jack Kerr was forced to withdraw with a broken wrist.
Country Week will be held in Ballarat next year from September 14-16 at Ballarat/Midlands and Buninyong golf clubs.
As the event will be played two weeks earlier, it will not be in the school holidays as has been the case in the past.
The Western District women’s Country Week squad was hit with a number of players coming down with illness just prior to the event.
This had an impact on the team’s performance.
The team played in division one, with their first match at the Riverside Golf Club against the host district, Murray Darling.
The host club won the match 5-2.
Tanis Heaphy lost to Lisa Garisch 1 Up.
Ros Brauer lost to Nycote Riordan 1 Up, Sandy Stewart lost to Angela Plumridge 3-4, Donna Weller defeated Michelle Philp 3-1 and Ellen Zeunert lost to Lee Bottomley 4-5.
Sue Walter defeated Sue Laird 2-1 and Molly O’Brien lost to Stephanie Baker 4-6.
In the afternoon the team was defeated by Ballarat, 2.5-4.5.
Tania Heaphy lost to Di Rogers 1 Up, Ros Brauer defeated Yvette McLean 3-2, Sandy Stewart lost to Paula Bandy 2-3 and Donna Wellar lost to Nikki Prato 1 Up.
Ellen Zeunert lost to Helen Pascore 2-3, Sue Walter was square with Kate McMahon and Molly O’Brien defeated Kristie Kennedy 5-3.
The following day the women travelled to the Coomealla Golf Club where they were defeated by South Australia.
Tania Heaphy was square with Jenny Edmanson, Ros Brauer lost to Kylie Mytyk 1 Up, Sandy Stewart lost to Paige Moorfoot 1 Up and Donna Weller defeated Fiona Rogers 4-3.
Ellen Zeunert defeated Kathy Naoumidis 5-4, Sue Walter lost to Alicia Clarke 2 Up and Molly O’Brien lost to Emma Pearce 2-1.
In the afternoon the team played Goulburn Murray and this match was squared.
Tania Heaphy defeated Beverly Hutchins 4-3, Ros Brauer defeated Jacinta Harrington 6-4 and Sandy Stewart was square with Nacole Horneman.
Donna Weller defeated Julie Daniel 7-5, Ellen Zeunert lost to Maxine Sadler 2 Up, Sue Walter lost to Rowena Wallace 1-2 and Molly O’Brien lost to Kim Morris 3-4.
The women had the bye the following day, which ended their campaign.
After four matches they finished on the bottom of the ladder and will be relegated to the second division next year.
Many thanks to all who played for their efforts over the four games.
The most valuable women’s player was Donna Weller who won three of the four matches she contested.
Donna was presented with the Peter Roughana Medal by last year’s winner, Ellen Zeunert.
Next year’s event will be held at Ballarat/Midlands/Buninyong golf clubs from September 14-16.
