The week of festivities was held last week as part of the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s annual celebration.

Among the highlights for local schools is the dress up day and parade at the end of the week, capping off a celebration of the important role reading plays in the development of skills and imaginations alike.

Mortlake College principal Linda Mooseek said students and their families had created an incredible range of costumes for last Friday’s parade to conclude the week.

“Everyone looked fantastic on what is another day of recognising the importance of books in our lives,” she said.

“The theme this year was ‘Book an Adventure’ which you can really link into whatever.

“We always have strong support and commitment from our families when it comes to dress up days or anything such as having Science Week the week prior.

“Our senior kids were also very active in participating, which I think speaks to the importance and value of literacy in our school that the kids are still willing to engage in it.”

St Colman’s Primary School also held its parade last Friday, which principal Janet Cain said showed diversity in which characters had captivated the imagination of students.

“The Book Week parade and colouring in competition is a big tradition in our school – it’s an old-fashioned tradition, but it’s good to keep the old-fashioned traditions alive in schools,” she said.

“The costumes were great.

“They always put so much effort in, or specifically their parents do, but they love it.

“We didn’t seem to have much of a theme among the students this year – normally there is more of a theme behind what they’re wearing, but there was a lot more variety this year.

“The enthusiasm our students have for picking out their costumes on Book Week matches the enthusiasm they have for reading.”
