In Mortlake the temperature peaked at 39.2 degrees just hours before the fire, which sparked while wind gusts peaked at 74km/h.

Country Fire Authority (CFA) crews were busy on Monday evening, as three fires across the region broke out.

At the time of publication, the fires were believed to have been caused by lightning strikes.

A CFA spokesperson said local units had responded to three separate grass and scrub fires.

The fires had started in Taroon, Mortlake and Timboon, but all three were quickly brought under control despite the dangerous conditions.

“Crews responded to a grass and scrub fire at Mcconnells Road in Taroon at around 7.55pm on Monday night. This fire was quickly brought under control at about 8:30 pm,” the spokesperson said.

“Crews were called to a grass and scrub fire at Mortlake-Ararat Road in Mortlake around 6.40pm last night.

“In Timboon, crews were called to a grass and scrub fire at Lindquists Road at around 7.40pm, which was brought under control at about 8.15pm.”

In addition, there were reports of a tree down in Jancourt on Old Cobden-Port Campbell Road.
