LOCAL students are hoping to put their best foot forward when they contest the School Sport Victoria State Cross Country finals today.

Three Mortlake P-12 College students Mia Ritchie, Holly Fowler and Grace Wareham are set to compete in the annual finals at Bundoora.

It will be Wareham’s and Fowler’s first outings, while for Ritchie it will be her third trip after placing 80th in the female primary 12/13 years race last year and 33rd the year before in the primary 11 years female event.

The trio qualified for the event after finishing in the top 10 of their sections at the Greater Western Region event held in May.

Ritchie came fourth in the female 12-13 secondary girls, Wareham was fifth in the female 15 years and Fowler finished seventh in the female 14 years.

Ritchie said the three girls were all “excited and nervous” to attend the state finals and all hope to run well.

She said would like to place “better than last year”, while Wareham said “I don’t expect to go very well but I’m happy I made it there”.

Fowler also said she would like to put in a strong performance in her race.

The trio’s races will be three of 16 for the day with events ranging in distances between two and five kilometres depending on the age group.
