AN almost record crowd of 2,750 racegoers enjoyed last weekend’s running of the 2023 Sungold Milk Camperdown Cup.

The big crowd, believed to be “very close” to the largest ever in the history of the Camperdown event, saw a quality field of races and enjoyed live music and festivities.

A new format, introduced on Saturday, attracted a high number of entries for the Fashions on the Field competition.

Rather than parading on a catwalk, entrants were simply required to have their photographs taken in front of a green screen and were then free to leave and enjoy the day’s events.

Judging took place later in the day – with Camperdown’s Georgie Place and Christopher Flannigan, from Geelong, announced the winners.

The main event on-track – the running of the 2023 Cup – saw the short-priced favourite ‘Riot and Rose’ (trained by Peter Moody and ridden by Jack Hill) first past the post.

The sought-after Neville Wilson Jockeys Challenge was a hotly contested affair with rider Jarrod Fry taking the honours.

“This was a hugely successful day for the club,” club manager Karen Van Kempen said.

“The event was in doubt in early December following the excessive Spring and early summer rain, however the committee and staff, led by president Anthony Finn and myself, worked tirelessly for four weeks to deliver the community event in beautiful sunny conditions.”

According to Ms Van Kempen the track raced very well; so much so that 140 horses arrived to participate in jump-outs two days later.
