Crucial win for the Cats
MORTLAKE scored a crucial 91 run win in the round 11 Warrnambool Moyne and District Cricket Association premier division match against the Northern Raiders.
Sent into bat at Henderson Oval, the Cats posted 8/251 from their 45 overs.
Openers Adam Atwood and Saman Gonawala put on 66 for the first wicket, each making 33 off 46 and 40 balls respectively.
The visitors’ middle order also fired, with Jack Lehmann making 41 from 37 balls, Ollie Mahncke 54 from 62 balls with six boundaries, Clinton Baker 38 from 42 balls, and Todd Lamont a run a ball 23.
Co-captain Craig Britten took the vital early wickets of Joe Gordon and Englishman Ed Taylor to have the home team at 2/32.
Clinton Baker removed in-form former Noorat player Jacob Fishwick and Raiders captain James Elford in quick succession, and when Kalhan Sineth joined in with a wicket the Raiders were teetering at 5/69.
The home team never really challenged after that point and ended their 45 overs well short at 9/160.
Damien Goddard finished the innings well with 3/23 from eight overs, Baker took 2/29 from nine and Britten 2/44 from nine.
Kalhan Sineth proved most difficult to score off, conceding just 16 from nine overs to go with his wicket.
Mortlake’s sixth win of the season sees the Cats in fifth position, only six points behind second.
This week in the premier division, Mortlake head to Terang to start a two day game against seventh placed Noorat Terang.
In the championship division, Mortlake had an eight wicket loss to Spring Creek at the DC Farran Oval.
Batting first, Mortlake made 9/154 from its 45 overs.
Brendan Gherashe top scored with 35 from 49 balls, with captain Stephen Blacker making 28 from 61.
Spring Creek had little trouble in the chase, passing the home team’s score in the 32nd over for the loss of just two wickets.
Max Slater and Keilan Webster-Bamford took a wicket each.
This week the championship Cats start a two day game against Nirranda on the Port Campbell turf.
In the division three game at Mortlake College, Mortlake scored an 87 run win over Warrnambool.
Neil Kelly blasted 109 from 65 balls, hitting 11 fours and five sixes to lead Mortlake to 7/273 from 40 overs.
In reply, Warrnambool was dismissed in the 38th over for 186.
Liam Schuuring led the home team’s bowlers with 4/33 from eight overs.
This week the fifth placed division three Cats host West Warrnambool at Mortlake College.
The Mortlake/Cobden under 17s started a two-day match on Wednesday night against Warrnambool at Mortlake College.
Warrnambool batted out its 45 overs on day one, finishing on 5/185.
Paddy Hassett led the bowlers with 2/24 from eight overs, with Max Slater, Lenny Walsh and Arlo Herry taking a wicket each.
The match continues this Tuesday.
In the under 15s, Mortlake/Cobden batted on Friday night on the first day of their match against Nestles at Mortlake College, scoring 251 after being dismissed in the 41st over.
The top three all scored half centuries, with Mikey Benallack making 53 from 73 balls, Sam Mahncke 50 from just 22 balls and Clem Walsh 57 from 39.
Nestles will attempt to run down Mortlake/Cobden’s score on day two this Friday.
