Cyclists return to the track
CAMPERDOWN junior cyclists returned to the race circuit last week, refreshed from the school holiday break and keen to get back on their bikes.
Race number 15 also saw an increase in the number of senior riders willing to help with the junior program, offering youngsters some handy hints and tips around the course.
Eleven juniors crossed the finish line last week.
As times were completed incorrectly, the handicap race was conducted for placings only.
Results: 1st Rieley, 2nd Taj and 3rd Josh.
Following the place getters were Quinn, Lawson, Ava, Bentley, Finny, Nathaniel, Bede and Eleanor.
Ten senior riders competed in race number 15 and they were greeted by a moderate south westerly wind for a regular Thursday night handicap race.
Quinn Clark, Matt Clark and Zane Vogels rolled off with a six minute start.
Two minutes later Matty Gstrien and Finn Baxter set off; a further minute to Tanya McKenzie and Josh Thompson, leaving Oliver Clark with one minute to the bunch ahead and two minutes to Todd Baxter and Shaun Thompson on scratch.
Oliver invested heavily early on and caught Tanya and Josh at Chocolyn,
He immediately sat on the front and set such a hard pace that Tanya questioned whether he was truly riding ‘pan y agau’.
Deciding not to hang out with teenage boys, Tanya let the wheel go and the other two pushed on to collect Matt and Finn around Podgers and then the three limit riders not long before the racecourse.
It was not until Pasques corner that the other riders realised that Oliver had been flicking his elbow for the last 10 kilometres and they finally obliged by opening up the sprint.
Zane led out, with Finn responding, only to blow up - leaving Oliver once more on the front searching for the line.
However, Josh and Matty G surged past at the finish.
Josh took out the win in 26 min 11sec follow by Matt G: 27:13, Zane 29:14, Oliver 25:14, Matt C 29:18, Quinn 29:21, Finn 27:26, Shaun 23:52 and Todd 23:57.
The wooden spoon was awarded to Tanya in a time of 28:58.
