Dance the night away in Cobden, Timboon and Jancourt

MEMBERS of the community have been invited to shed their insecurities and gather to dance away the evenings, with weekly dancing groups gathering in Cobden, Timboon and Jancourt from this week.

The Red Hill Public Hall, nestled around eight kilometres south east from Cobden on Lavers Hill-Cobden Road, will come alive each Tuesday from 7.30pm, beginning for the year from this month.

The same program will also be run at the Timboon Golf Club on a Wednesday evening.

In addition, Cobden has a line-dancing group which is led by Phyllis Lewis at the Cobden Uniting Church Hall on Thursday evenings – where beginners are invited from 7pm to learn the steps before the main event from 7.30pm.

The evenings include a few line dances as warm-ups, followed by partner dances to cha cha beats, waltzes, basic rock ’n’ roll and more.

The Red Hill Hall Dance Group has been getting together to dance since 2012, but treasurer Jennie Baker hopes to get more of the community involved in events at public halls.

“You may never have wondered what goes on in our local halls, but I’m pleased to tell you there is plenty of fun, laughter, friendships, wonderful music and maybe even supper,” she said.

“Despite people telling me they have two left feet, I’ve not yet come across that very rare condition used to be excused from the dance floor.

“Our music magician, Yvonne, will keep you on your toes tapping to her wonderful selection of music for dozens of different dances.

“There are no official dance lessons, we all learn as we go, with a little help from Googling up western partner dances.

“We pride ourselves on being able to include people into ‘progressive’ partner dances even when the numbers are uneven.”

No experience is necessary as everyone involved is learning as they go – placing priority on fun and friendship over precision.

“All ages are welcome,” Mrs Baker said.

“The Tuesday night group at the Red Hill Hall are self-taught after being shown new dances from regular dancers.

“We just help each other.

“It’s perfect for future debutantes and partners.

“Get your friends together and come, as all it takes is a few brave couples.”
