TWENTY deceased penguins were recently found at the Twelve Apostles Beach with fox prints nearby.

Parks Victoria area chief ranger Rhianna Burns said on Friday, November 22 Parks Victoria conducted a controlled operation at the Twelve Apostles Beach following the discovery of the dead penguins.

“To protect this endemic species and its delicate habitat, Parks Victoria engaged a professional contractor to humanely remove two foxes from the area,” she said.

“Local rangers provided on-site information, including temporary signage, to ensure public safety.

“We thank the public for their understanding and cooperation during this operation. Parks Victoria remains committed to safeguarding our native wildlife and we will continue to monitor the area to mitigate future threats to the Little Penguin colony.”

The Twelve Apostles Beach is designated to safeguarding the Little Penguins colony under the National Parks Act 1975.

Visitors can safely view the Little Penguins from the Twelve Apostles Lookout as they come ashore at dusk.

The Cobden Timboon Coast Times understands while the site’s steep cliffs and surrounding ocean typically deter predators, recent incursions, including a significant incident in 2018, have highlighted the ongoing threat posed by foxes.

Parks Victoria has a legal and moral responsibility to eradicate feral or pest species from protected areas, ensuring the long-term survival of native fauna and flora.
