Defy the drift
COBDEN Technical School Year 10 student Kayley Mahoney was among a group of 24 students who recently participated in Rotary’s Defying the Drift program.
The program, which began in 2010, is designed to encourage young people in country areas to enter the agriculture industry through education and work experience.
Kayley said her farm engineering teacher saw that she, along with some boys in the same class, were a good fit for the program.
“I enjoyed the whole thing,” she said.
“It was an eye-opening experience.
“I never really thought about agriculture, but I enjoyed the range of things we learned about.”
The program included a three-day residential course at Horsham’s Longerenong College and farm visits.
“The first day was a tour of Longerenong College in Horsham,” Kayley said.
“Their drone man was there, so he taught us a bit about their drones.
“The second day we had farm tours, and we were gone most of that day visiting three farms and one company.
“We learned about what they did and how they ran their farms.
“We talked about what agriculture was, how to get into it, what an employee looks like and more.”
Kayley will be making a presentation to the Cobden Rotary Club about her experiences in coming weeks.
