Demons break drought
ROUND six proved a successful one for the Timboon Demons who last weekend celebrated their first win of the season.
After five consecutive losses, the ninth-placed Demons broke the drought on Saturday, defeating the seventh-placed Dennington by 10 points at home.
Coach Marcus Hickey was full of praise for his side, saying the win would no doubt instil some self-belief and confidence in the players.
“While we hadn’t had a win up until Saturday, we’d had some pretty close games and aside from the one against Nirranda, we had played four games of really good footy,” Hickey said.
“In the past we’d had a few lapses and not quite got over the line so it was nice to get the win on Saturday.
“Ben Newey had a great game in the midfield, as did Mitch Wallace, and putting Mitch Gristede in the ruck allowed me to go forward and I think that combination worked well for us.
“We’ve got Merrivale this weekend which will be another tough one but we’ll go in with added confidence and see how we go. We’ve got a couple of tough ones coming up and then we play Rovers before the bye; it’d be nice to get a couple of wins on the board by then.”
Final scores were Timboon 15.8.98 to Dennington 14.4.88.
Best for the Demons were Gristede, Newey, Rhys Ziegelaar, Luke Smith, Martin Angus and Ned Deppeler.
Marcus Hickey scored four for the Demons while Newey added three, Martin Angus and Wallace two apiece, and Gristede, Ash Hunt, Eben White and Rhys Ziegelaar scored one apiece.
Timboon’s reserves were hoping to notch up win number two when they met Dennington but it wasn’t to be – going down by 43 points, 10.6.66 to 3.5.23.
Best for the Demons were Toby Hendrix, Robert Matthews, Bayley Kelly, Drew Kordupel and Steven Crees.
Jack Gaut, Anthony Glennen and Drew Kordupel kicked a goal each.
It was a clean sweep on the netball courts for the Demons, winning all six games played for the day.
