Demons continue unblemished start
THE clash of the two unbeaten Mininera and District Football League teams last Saturday saw Lismore/Derrinallum defeat Woorndoo/Mortlake by 30 points.
The reigning premiers dominated the first half, kicking nine goals to three, before running out winners 13.8.86 to 8.7.55 at Mortlake’s DC Farran Oval.
“It was a good contest, we were on early, Woorndoo/Mortlake seemed to set up to counter attack off our turnover,” Demons coach Alec Wiltshire said.
“They set the ball up pretty well, and they were pretty quick when they go forward.”
Woorndoo/Mortlake came back to outscore the visitors in the second half but the game was always in Lismore/Derrinallum’s control.
“We thought it was manageable most of the day, our pressure was there, it was a clearance sort of game.
“They defensively set up pretty well from stoppages and there was a lot of repeat ball ups and throw-ins, they just played a bit of a territory game,” Wiltshire said.
Austin Humphrey kicked five goals for Lismore/Derrinallum in the win and was best on ground.
“Austin was pretty impressive, the stuff he does without the footy is probably more impressive too, his ability to lock it inside 50 and turn it over is really strong,” Wiltshire said.
“He actually had his kicking boots on this week, last week against Penshurst, he kicked one goal and eight behinds, but I reckon he would've only had the five shots on the weekend and kicked all five, so it was a nice turnaround.”
Henry Walsh and Blake Scott were also in the Demons best.
“Henry led from the front, just getting the ball going our way, they tried to scrap it up a little bit and get numbers around the contest, but Henry had the ability to sort of get it going our way and get it into space a lot,” Wiltshire said.
“Blake was probably the main recipient of that, just with his speed breaking away from stoppages, both those guys just got it going our way.”
First year Demon Isaiah Harrington, recruited from Alvie, was listed in Lismore/Derrinallum’s best for the first time.
“Isaiah just keeps getting better and better each week playing in the back six, he didn't lose a contest one on one and just his ability to use the footy too,” Wiltshire said.
“His efficiency was right up there, he just keeps getting better and learning that connection with how our blokes play, it was good to see him doing his best on Saturday.”
Tomorrow the Demons play Tatyoon in their final game for the season at Derrinallum before switching to Lismore.
“In my seven years at Lismore/Derrinallum, I’ve only ever beaten Tatyoon once,” Wiltshire said.
“In every other contest they've had the wood over us, we’ll have to bring our best footy on the weekend to beat them.”
The reserves match saw the Demons win strongly, 14.9.93 to 1.4.10.
Brock Reid, Tyla Reid, Steven Fisher and Ben Atkins were best in the win, with Brock Reid kicking four goals and Ryan Jeffrey three.
In the under 17s, Lismore/Derrinallum had a 4.5.29 to 2.6.18 win.
Jackson Davies, Jackson Lyddy and Austin Price were best for the Demons, with Eddie Gellie kicking two goals.
The under 13 game saw Woorndoo/Mortlake score an 8.6.54 to 2.1.13 win.
The A grade netball saw Woorndoo/Morlake register a 41-35 win.
Best for the Demons were Tess Lamont and Eliza O’Neil, with Rachel Vagg scoring 14 goals and Anita Burchell 11.
Woorndoo/Mortlake took out the B grade game with a 32-26 win.
Hannah Walker and Eb McLoughlin were the best for the B grade Demons, with Lauren McLennan shooting 10 goals.
In C grade, Lismore/Derrinallum scored a 20-17 win, with Bella Hovey and Tiarna Evans best for the Demons and Simone Gellie shooting 14 goals.
The 17 and under netball saw Woorndoo/Mortlake score a 36-15 win.
Lacey Grundy and Charlotte Henderson were best for the Demons, with Lacey Grundmann shooting 6 goals.
Lismore/Derrinallum recorded a 19-9 win in 15 and under netball.
Georgia Kew and West Samson were the Demons best, with Charlotte Henderson shooting eight goals and Alexis Henderson five.
The 13 and under game saw Woorndoo/Mortlake score a 39-12 win.
Lily Webster and Alirah Condie were best for the junior Demons, with Alexis Henderson shooting eight goals.
