Demons dominance continues
LISMORE/Derrinallum’s senior footballers have made it two big wins in a row to start the Mininera and District Football League season.
The Demons kept Wickliffe/Lake Bolac goalless until the last quarter in their impressive 16.18.114 to 2.3.15 win at the Lake Bolac Recreation Reserve.
“We were really good for three quarters, we’ve got a bit to work on with our last quarter,” Lismore/Derrinallum coach Alec Wiltshire said.
Wickliffe/Lake Bolac outscored the Demons two goals to one in the last quarter.
“Probably playing on the bigger ground and the job was probably done at three-quarter time when I guess there was a bit of complacency slip in.
“But to their credit, they played out the game and obviously won the last quarter, that would’ve been their challenge, if you told me we were going to win by 100 points at the start of the day, I would’ve taken it.”
Wiltshire was pleased with the Demons start and a dominant six goal third quarter.
“We set the tone early, our ball movement was good.
“They were intercepting and putting numbers back behind the ball, but we made the adjustments in the second and the third quarters; I thought our third quarter was very good.”
Spearhead Lachie Constable kicked six goals, with Blake Scott best on ground.
“Blake copped a lot of attention, but didn’t let it faze him, he just worked through it.
“I know he kicked two goals himself, but he would’ve had six shots on goal, and I reckon he probably set up six, if you put that into numbers, that’s a pretty good game of footy.”
Henry Walsh continues to dominate the ruck for Lismore/Derrinallum.
“With this new ruck rule, as good as Henry was last year, it just makes him even more dominant.
“He probably used to come unstuck against the bigger ruckmen that could jump the run a bit, now they can’t cross the line, he’s 200 plus centimetres and can jump, it’s just a huge advantage basically.”
Wiltshire also had praise for some unsung performers.
“Noah McIntosh is probably stiff not to be in that best six, he’s as tough as leather boots and probably not the most prettiest footballer, but does all the little things, and Hayden Brett’s probably another one that fits that mould too.
“It’s getting hard to pick just six best players when you’re getting 21 contributors each week.”
The Mininera league has the week off this weekend, with Lismore/Derrinallum’s next game on May 2 against Hawkesdale/Macarthur at Derrinallum.
The reserves match also saw the Demons win strongly, 20.16.136 to 01.0.6.
Veteran Todd Lamont bagged nine goals in the win and was named best alongside Michael Bradford and Jock McGavin.
Kaleb McIlveen, Matthew Bacon, Bradford, McGavin, and Jackson Davies all kicked two goals each.
In the under 17s, the Demons had a big 22.12.144 to 1.2.8 win.
Bryce Hudson, Jackson Davies and Laine Scott were best for the Demons, with Davies and Scott kicking five goals each and Luke Bond three.
The under 13 game saw Lismore/Derrinallum score a 10.12.72 to 2.2.14 win.
Best for the junior Demons were Emmett Henderson, William Turner and Patrick Greig, with Andrew Wylie kicking three goals.
There was no game for Lismore/Derrinallum’s A grade netballers with Wickliffe/Lake Bolac not competing in the competition’s top grade in 2026.
Lismore/Derrinallum took out the B grade game with a big 54-10 win.
Phoebe Brown and Sarah Kelly were the best for the B grade Demons, with Bridgete Filbay shooting 25 goals and Stella Horspole 17.
In C grade, Lismore/Derrinallum scored a 41-11 win, best players being Simone Gellie and Jaimee Murphy, goal attack Gellie shooting 20 goals as did goal shooter Isabelle Huggins.
The 17 and under netball saw Wickliffe/Lake Bolac score a 37-22 win.
Lacey Grundmann and Kira Srdoc were best for Lismore/Derrinallum, with Grundmann shooting 11 goals and Neave Thompson nine.
No 15 and under netball game was played, with Wickliffe/Lake Bolac not fielding a team in that grade in 2026.
The 13 and under game saw Lismore/Derrinallum score a 21-19 win.
Stella Dudman and Matilda Henderson were best for the junior Demons, with Alexis Henderson scoring a match high 18 goals.
