The Demons were too strong for the lowly placed Dogs, recording a comfortable 16.9 (105) to 5.10 (40) victory at Timboon Recreation Reserve.
Coach Marcus Hickey was pleased with his side’s performance against a spirited Dennington outfit.
“The boys went well,” he said.
“Dennington came out firing and we knew they would, they haven’t been going that well.
“But I said to the boys if we match it with them (early) we’ll run over them in the second half.”
Seven goals to three in the second term helped the Demons establish a handy 32 point buffer at the main break before a dominant display in the second half sealed the result.
They kicked a further six goals and kept the Dogs to just six behinds as they ran away with a 65 point win.
“We just used the ball really well in the second half,” Hickey said.
“It came in really wet in the third quarter so it was deadlocked and it fined up in the fourth and we just used the ball better.
“But we were fairly even and they dropped off in the second half.”
Hickey said other positives included the “young ones who were again fantastic”, while he was also pleased with their ability to capitalise on the Dogs’ mistakes.
“They weren’t as strong a side as last week but we were able to get them to turn the ball over (easily),” he said.
“We worked on forcing turnovers like last week but this week we were able to then hit the scoreboard after a turnover which was good.”
Ash Hunt was named best on ground, with the midfielder performing strongly alongside Ben Newey, Tyler Fowler and Jordy Fowler.
“Ash Hunt and Ben Newey in the midfield were great,” Hickey said.
“We moved Tyler Fowler to half-back in the second half and he was really solid and gave us good drive.
“And Jordy Fowler was really good, he was consistent all day.”
The Demons are now preparing for a trip to Walter Oval to face South Rovers this Saturday, with Hickey wanting to end a run of losses on the wide expanses of the Lions’ home ground.
He said the Lions were in a similar boat to his side having lost a few early games and said the contest was a “50-50 game”, with the Demons setting themselves for a “big one”.
“We haven’t won over there for a long time so we’re keen to break the hoodoo,” he said.
“They play that ground well and over the years we’ve tended to get sucked in to the ball and they have spread on us.
“We’ll be working this week on not all going to the ball and covering off their exits but we know if we bring our best footy we can be competitive.”
