After a competitive start, the visitors were held goalless in the last three quarters as the Demons ran out 18.22.130 to 2.2.14 winners at the Lismore Recreation Reserve.

“They were pretty physical early and took it up to us before we settled in and got the job done,” Lismore/Derrinallum coach Alec Wiltshire said.

“The conditions were tricky with swirling winds, on and off showers all day and periods where the ball was slippery and play getting stuck on one side of the oval; the game wasn’t much of a spectacle.”

In a physically contested game, inside midfielders Max McIntosh, Lachlan Coutts and James Halloran were best for the Demons.

“Maxy, Lachie and Jimmy are all big boys that roll through our midfield; they got their hands on it, did all the dirty work and fed it out to our runners and got it going our way.”

Star forwards Lachie Constable and Austin Humphrey kicked four goals each, with Jack Parker kicking three.

Wiltshire said the win was a team effort.

“It was hard to name our best players, we had a pretty even contribution across the board.

“I thought we were probably a touch flat in the first quarter, but after quarter time our work rate definitely picked up, it was a really good, even spread across the team from quarter time onwards.”

This week the Demons play third-placed Hawkesdale/Macarthur at the Hawkesdale Recreation Reserve.

“They’re always pretty tough to beat, and I reckon they’d have this one marked on the calendar from a while out like us too.

“We got the points over them at the start of the year so they’ll be chomping at the bit to knock us off, Hawkesdale’s ground is a different dynamic, being long and narrow, so we look forward to embracing the challenge.”
