Demons run continues
LISMORE/Derrinallum’s strong start to their senior football premiership defence continued with a 148 point win over Great Western on Saturday.
Playing at the Great Western Recreation Reserve, the Demons kept the home team to just one goal in their 23.19.157 to 1.3.9 win in the round four Mininera and District clash.
After an inaccurate first half, the Demons converted well in the second half, kicking 16 goals across the third and fourth quarters.
“To have 42 scoring shots was good, the game sort of tailored in two halves, we were inaccurate in the first half, Austin Humphrey and Lachie Constable had 10 shots on goal between them and kicked 10 points, the positive was, other than their goal kicking, their forward pressure was enormous, and they were marking the footy,” Lismore/Derrinallum coach Alec Wiltshire said.
“But to kick 16 goals in the second half, we obviously adjusted a couple of things, we were probably kicking under pressure a lot in the first half, we just made a couple of minor adjustments, but the overall effort and contest didn’t drop for four quarters.”
Henry Walsh was again best for the Demons, with younger brother Tommy also in the best.
“It was good to see, Tommy obviously lives in Henry’s shadow a little bit but he was really impressive.
“He used the ball super well, he’s got leg speed, played on the wing, he held his position all day and drove the ball forward well.”
Constable found his accuracy in the second half, finishing with seven goals, with Jack McCallum and Noah McIntosh kicking three each.
“Noah was really good, he works from contest to contest, but also locks the ball inside 50.
“It was good to see him hit the scoreboard too, he’s a pressure oriented footballer, he just does his role, he’s Mr Consistent.”
Wiltshire was also impressed with the game of veteran Will Langley.
“Langers is probably the oldest player currently listed here, he gives us plenty of drive off halfback.
“He has good use of his left foot off halfback and pretty much sets us up.”
Tomorrow’s game sees the Demons host Penshurst at Derrinallum.
“They’ll be up for the challenge, they had the wood over us for a couple of years, and obviously it was only last year we came away with the chocolates.
“We’re expecting a tough contest.”
The reserves contest saw Great Western win by 33 points, 11.8.74 to 6.5.41.
Matthew Bacon, Jason Germon and Tim Fitzgerald were best, with Ben Atkins kicking two goals.
Great Western also got the points in the under 17s with a 5.10.40 to 4.3.27 win.
Austin Price, Jackson Davies and Laine Scott were the Demons best in the loss.
Lismore/Derrinallum had a big 19.7.121 to 0.0.0 win in the under 13 football.
Liam Barr, Andrew Wylie and Cooper Rumler were the junior Demons best, with Wylie kicking five goals.
The A grade netball saw Lismore/Derrinallum record a 40-35 win.
Steph Smith and Paris Murray were the Demons best.
In B grade, Great Western scored a 41-36 win.
Grace Coker and Sarah Kelly were best for Lismore/Derrinallum, with Bridgette Filbay shooting 21 goals and Lauren McLennan 15.
The C grade game ended in a 31-31 draw, with Simone Gellie and Tiarna Evans best.
Great Western was too strong in the 17 and under netball, recording a 59-15 win.
Natash Henderson, Neave Thompson and Ruby Stephenson were best for the Demons, with Lacey Grundmann shooting seven goals.
The 15 and under game saw Lismore/Derrinallum record a 23-17 win.
