Demons stamp their mark
THE much-anticipated contest between second placed Lismore/Derrinallum and third placed reigning premier Penshurst on Saturday turned out to be a one-sided affair.
The round 14 senior football clash at the Lismore Recreation Reserve saw the Demons run out 85 points winners in a strong display.
“We’re not going to get too far ahead of ourselves as Penshurst did have a few out,”Lismore/Derrinallum coach Alec Wiltshire said of the 20.9.129 to 7.2.44 result.
“But it was a great win and really nice to keep building momentum.”
It was a day of celebration all round for the Demons.
All three football teams had good wins, the junior win a big one for Wiltshire.
“The under 16.5s set the tone for the day, it’s been a very long time since we’ve beaten Penshurst in the juniors.”
The club celebrated 25 years since the merger of the former Derrinallum and Lismore clubs.
In addition, the 2002 reserves football premiership team, the 2015 senior premiers and the 2005 C grade netball flag winning team all had reunions in a massive day for the Demons.
“There was a huge crowd for the reunion, the support for our teams was incredible,” Wiltshire said.
“It was great to have the former players celebrating well into the night.”
Blake Scott, Austin Humphrey and Henry Walsh were best for the Demons on Saturday.
“Blake as always copped a fair bit of attention from the opposition, his clearances from congestion and drive from the midfield were superb,” Wiltshire said.
“Austin made sure the ball kept locked in up forward, while Henry’s work to push back in defence and take a dozen or more marks was fantastic.”
Demons spearhead Lachie Constable continues his march to 100 goals, bagging seven goals to go to 85 for the season.
Other multiple goal kickers for Lismore/Derrinallum were Humphrey with four, Scott with three and Jack McCallum and Jack Parker with two each.
The team effort impressed Wiltshire.
“The whole team is playing well, all our unsung heroes are really contributing and allowing our best players to play well.”
This week Lismore/Derrinallum travel to Willaura to play Moyston/Willaura.
Lismore/Derrinallum also had a good win in the reserves game, 6.15.51 to 3.3.21.
