DERRINALLUM College students and staff went rainbow against LGBTQIA+ discrimination recently.

School well being team member Andrew Stephen said globally, IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia) has been acknowledged since 2004, bringing attention to the ongoing violence towards the LGBTQIA+ community and celebrating the richness of diverse human experience.

“Our aim was to raise awareness for the work still needed to combat discrimination,” he said.

“Celebrating IDAHOBIT has had a positive impact on our school and the community.

“Our greatest achievement this year was the painting by the VCAL class of a giant progressive pride flag.”

Mr Stephen said battling the cold, wet mornings and rain, those involved managed to complete the wall in time for the mural unveiling.

“We had the pleasure of many guests from Safe in the South West, the Safe and Connected Team, School Focussed Youth Service and the Corangamite Shire,” he said.

“As a school, we try to teach our students to take a stand against bullying, racism and sexism and this is just the same.

“Together, we’ll continue to make progress in achieving inclusion and equality for our LGBTQIA+ community, and be a voice for change.”
