District pauses to pay its respects at Anzac Day services
RESIDENTS across the region stood shoulder to shoulder in commemoration of the soldiers who have served, fought and died in defence of the nation at Anzac Day ceremonies.
Timboon and district residents attended a Timboon Action led march and service in the township.
Event co-ordinator Peter Pope was pleased with how the second annual Timboon service went.
“It was very good,” he said.
“We estimate there was about 150-200 people there.
“Everyone thought it was good.”
Mr Pope said there were two guest speakers at the service.
“We had Peter Younis speaking on some of the history locally and Bev Martin, an old family from here,” he said.
“We also put a brass plaque down there (war memorial) with the World War I service names and it was presented to the public.
“The march started at the senior citizens centre and the Barlow’s (Wendy and Ivan) led the march on their horses.”
In Cobden, veterans, school students, young families and town leaders were among those to pay their respects at the 1st Cobden Scouts organised event.
Anzac Day co-ordinator John Wason estimated between 300 to 400 people gathered for the service.
“It was really good; it was well received,” he said.
“The Scouts did an awesome job with the readings and flag ceremony.”
Representatives from the town’s clubs and organisations, veterans, school representatives and district residents laid wreaths on the war memorial.
Mr Wason thanked all those involved in the service.
“Thank you to everyone for turning up and thanks as well to the parents for their help with catering for the morning tea,” he said.
Port Campbell residents attended the popular dawn service, with numbers of community members paying their respects strong.
Lest we forget.
