CAMPERDOWN Lions Club will be asking people not to be ‘silly sausages’ and get their eyes tested as part of their annual eye health campaign.

The club will be conducting sausage sizzles in various areas, providing brochures and decorated napkins reminding people about the importance of getting their eyes tested.

Camperdown Lions Club’s campaign forms part of the Lions Eye Health Program (LEHP), which was established in the state in 2000.

LEHP is the Australian branch of the Lions International challenge to become “Knights of the Blind and Vision Impaired”, a challenge set by American Helen Keller in 1925.

Since then, Lions have run two major fundraisers and established 1372 special eye hospitals and training centres.

Now in its 98th year, the challenge has focused on glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.

Part of this is World Sight Day, which is marked on the second Tuesday of October.

Lions Club member Bill Duncanson said the club intends to keep up their promotion of regular eye tests between now and the end of the year.

“Wherever we appear with our barbeque, sizzling our sausages, we will have the message in brochure and poster form ‘Don’t be a silly sausage – get your eyes tested’, and we still hope to do some more testing in the schools in the district before the end of this year as well,” he said.

Camperdown Lions Club also aims to conduct eye checks in local schools before the end of the year.

These tests involve use of an acuity test, depth perception test, colour vision test, and a spot vision screener to pick up on potential eye issues.

The Lions Club suggest that people have their eyes tested every two years, with diabetes checks also important for those over age 40.
