Downpour fails to dampen cup day spirits

IT was always going to take more than a little rain to wash away the excitement of the 2026 Terang Cup.

Braving the elements: Prolonged periods of rain and chilly temperatures were not enough to scare away crowds from the running of the 2026 Sungold Milk Terang Cup over the weekend.

The Terang and District Racing Club has applauded the success of the town’s biggest day in racing despite battling against 7mm of rain, with the temperature dropping and chilly winds confronting racegoers.

Terang and District Racing Club president Janice Harris said the committee was pleased with the success of the day despite the conditions resulting in less attendance than usual.

“Even though the conditions were not very favourable it was still really well attended,” she said.

“The initiative with the footy clubs was really good too, so we had around 60 people from the footy clubs alone represented.

“We had the band inside and a barbecue so that was really good.

“Everyone had a great time – the feedback has been really positive and quite a few people have said what a great day it was.”

Racegoers flocked backwards and forwards between sheltered areas and the track in a bid to keep warm and dry, but the action on the field lived up to the expectations with a who’s-who of training superstars bringing out talent which made for a bumper day.

“There was also a lot of sponsors there so the sponsors room was well attended, the general bar was full and everyone seemed to have a good time despite staying undercover and out of the elements,” Ms Harris said.

“The sun shined for some of the races and other times you could hardly see them, but overall it was a good day.”
