COBDEN’S trip to Port Fairy last Saturday ended in a drawn game for the Bombers.
A slight second-half lapse by the Bombers was enough for the Seagulls to get their heads back in the game in the final term at Gardens Oval, with both sides finishing on 98 points on the final siren.
Straight kicking in front of goals saw the home side at 16.2.98 while the Bombers finished with 15.8.98.
The wet and cold conditions at Port Fairy saw a fairly even first quarter, however the visitors were able to nose in front in the second term, going into the major break with a 23-point lead.
But the home side kept their heads and worked hard in the third quarter to add five majors to the board while containing the Bombers to three goals, two behinds.
The Seagulls made full use of the ball in their forward 50 in the final term, adding a further five goals while containing the visitors to three.
Jordan Fowler, Jesse Williamson, Patrick Smith, Ben Berry, Noah Mounsey and Grady Rooke all worked hard throughout the day to be named in the Bombers’ best.
Williamson and Christian Koroneos added three each to the scoreboard while Grady Rooke contributed two goals and Jia Anderson, Tully Darcy, Luke Hickey, Paul Pekin, Henry Robertson, Patrick Smith and Daniel Watson each kicked a goal.
The loss sees the Bombers now sitting seventh on the Hampden League ladder, with three wins under their belts, but just half a game out of the top five.
Earlier in the day, Cobden’s reserves worked hard and were rewarded with a huge 130-point victory over Port Fairy, booting 20.12.132 to the Seagulls’ two points.
Joshua Hickey, Sam Darcy, Louis Darcy, Harry Darcy and Oliver Darcy were all named in the Bombers’ best.
Harry Darcy went on a kicking spree, booting six goals for the day, and was well supported by team-mates Thomas Darcy and Nicholas Kemp with three each, and Louis Darcy, Oliver Darcy and Michael Koroneos with two each.
Sam Darcy and Joe Hutt also contributed to the scoreboard with one goal apiece.
Cobden’s under 18.5s went down by 10 points on the weekend, defeated by Port Fairy 6.5.41 to 7.9.51.
Benjamin McGlade, Jonty Robertson, Eli Dwyer, Noah Sinnott, Blake Mottram and Jayden Gass were named best for the Bombers while goals went to Isaac McVilly (2) and one each to Tyler Humphrey, Benjamin McGlade, Blake Mottram and Noah Sinnott.
The netball courts provided a mixed bag of results for the Bombers, with wins in the open, division one, 17 and under, 17 and under reserves, 15 and under reserves and 13 and under reserves.
