Driver Reviver success

LIONS Club members in Camperdown and Lismore were busy over the Labour Day long weekend, providing travellers an opportunity to stop and rest on their journeys.

The Driver Reviver initiative aims to keep drivers safe, particularly during long weekends where many are travelling to events, by encouraging them to take a break and enjoy a free hot beverage and a biscuit to beat fatigue.

Camperdown Lions Club publicity officer Maree Belyea said there was a steady stream of travellers visiting the Apex Park Driver Reviver until around 4.30pm last Friday.

“Most people who were going through to Port Fairy and Warrnambool had gone by then,” she said.

“People appreciate the opportunity to stop and have a break and chat while having a coffee.

“It’s all about encouraging road safety – people taking a break instead of keeping going when they’re tired.

“We never really know how effective it is, but if we happen to save one person it’s worthwhile.

“We have been doing it for quite a number of years on the Friday leading up to the Port Fairy Folk Festival.”

The Lismore Lions Club also held a Driver Reviver site in the Main Street, with one of Derrinallum P-12 College’s Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major (VCE VM) students and a teacher volunteering at the site to ensure drivers took a break to keep themselves safe.
