DERRINALLUM’S Community Op Shop has made the move to EFTPOS for the first time, allowing an option for customers to pay for purchases by cash or card.

The new EFTPOS, has given the op shop more opportunities to make sales.

Volunteer Cathy Berens said the new EFTPOS machine would capture sales usually missed when customers do not have cash.

“Not many people carry cash anymore, so we missed out on some sales,” she said.

“All our sales go to the community, so the community was missing out.

“Sometimes people say when we only had cash that they’d go look in their cars for coins, and they still might not have enough.

“Now, with the card option, people will purchase more, which is great.”

Prior to the new machine, Ms Berens said the op shop only had a limited float of cash.

“If someone brought in a big note, we’d have to go to the Post Office and change the large notes which inconvenienced the Post Office sometimes,” she said.

“We’d send people up to the Post Office to get cash out from the Post Office banking or go to the supermarket and buy something and get cash if they had it.

“It was always cash, and things were priced accordingly.”

Ms Berens said customers, while initially surprised when asked if they wish to pay by cash or card, were pleased with the addition of EFTPOS.

“People were asking; the need was there, and it has been for a long time,” she said.

“We’ve looked into different options, and we asked op shops in Camperdown how they did it and we found a solution that best suited us.

“We’ve got new signage now; we’re not offering cash out because we’re not holding much cash anymore, so we can’t offer someone cash out for their EFTPOS.”
