Eighteen units, aircraft called to fire

EIGHTEEN CFA units responded to reports of smoke on Princes Highway in Pirron Yallock over the weekend.

The smoke was reported at around 3:36pm on Saturday, February 4, and units found the cause of the smoke was two fires burning close together.

A CFA spokesperson said units responded from Camperdown, Cobden, Corangamite, Carp/Sth Purrum, Colac, Cororooke, Irrewillipe, Nalangil, Swan Marsh, Weerite, Tesbury, Bungador, Larpent, and Pomborneit.

“Victoria Police were called for traffic control,” they said.

“Over 12 Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) units were on scene in support.

“No assets were under threat, but an advice warning was issued to the community.”

The fire spanned closed to three hectares, with firebombing aircraft called to the incident for assistance.

The spokesperson said the incident was deemed under control at 4.28pm.

“Fire crews remained on scene well into the evening,” they said.

The incident has been handed over to FFMVic for investigation as the fires are being treated as suspicious.
