LEADERSHIP Great South Coast’s Community Leadership program launched in Warrnambool on Thursday, February 2, welcoming 16 current and emerging leaders from across south west Victoria, including four from Corangamite Shire.

Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation’s Brett Clark opened the evening with a Welcome to Country, including a song in traditional language.

Deputy chair of the Leadership Great South Coast board Jessica Fishburn said the evening event was a huge success.

“It was great to meet the 2023 participants,” she said.

“There was great excitement about the year ahead.”

The participants, from five local government areas of the south west, work across community, government and private business.

The program participants were supported by their family, friends, employers and sponsors at Brother Fox, Deakin Warrnambool on Thursday night.

Corangamite Shire Council’s Sports and Recreation coordinator Jane Hinds was a participant in the program, and found the launch event to be a great start to the program that provided opportunities to meet other participants, partners and board members.

“I applied to LGSC to develop my leadership skills, understand the challenges and opportunities within the great south coast and expand on my networks across the region,” she said.

“I am looking forward to gaining a better understanding of the great south coast community, expanding my knowledge and meeting other leaders within our community.”

Corangamite Shire Council officers Chris Rodda and Rachel Cameron, and author Emma Shortis, also represented Corangamite shire at the event.

Ms Fishburn, also a graduate of the program, said the participants have a challenging and highly rewarding year ahead.

“We know from our 168 Alumni that this is a life-changing program for many,” she said.

“I look forward to seeing how the program impacts this year’s participants.”

Leadership Great South Coast (LGSC) provides an annual community leadership program for aspiring and emerging leaders drawn from all sectors of the great south coast region.

LGSC is a member of Regional Leadership Australia, which supports the nine Victorian Community Leadership programs across the state.

The government builds relationships and networks between the business, community and government sectors.

Participants are drawn from these sectors, creating diverse experiences and perspectives when considering the nature of leadership, and the future of our community and its social, economic and environmental prosperity.
