Gas issue: CFA units attended Dawson Street after a resident reported the smell of gas last Saturday.

A resident called at 7.42pm on Saturday, November 16 reporting they could smell gas on Dawson Street, Camperdown.

CFA units from Weerite, Camperdown and Noorat attended the scene, with the gas company also called to the scene.

CFA District 6 assistant chief fire officer Craig Brittain said while there were multiple areas with high aromas of gas, the incident was revealed to not be a gas leak.

“The gas leak wasn’t gas per say - it was just the chemical that they use to make the gas smell like it does,” he said.

“On Friday the Iona Gas Plant had overpressurised the chemical that actually makes the smell within the gas.

“That had caused over-reporting and false reporting in Warrnambool, Koroit and in Camperdown.

“There was no gas leak – there was just an excess of the smell coming through the system.”

The gas company returned the next day in daylight to resolve the incident, which was declared under control at 8.33pm and safe at 9.24pm on Saturday.
