THE natural beauty of Terang and its characters was celebrated last week with the opening of the Postcards from Terang photography exhibition.

The exhibition enjoyed a successful launch at the old Terang courthouse on Friday, with many of the faces which adorn the images on the walls joining the bustling crowd to celebrate their community.

Christina de Water, the photographer behind the Postcards from Terang exhibition, said she was thrilled with the reception to the hundreds of photos on display at the premiere.

“I’m chuffed everyone is here and I feel incredibly moved by Terang,” she said.

Adeline Thomas opened the exhibition with a welcome to country and traditional smoking ceremony, followed by speeches from Corangamite Shire mayor Ruth Gstrein and Ms de Water.

Jim Williams followed the speeches, performing a whimsical original song about how there is not quite being another placelike Terang.

Cr Gstrein congratulated Ms de Water on the “amazing results” she had achieved over the past few months in preparing the exhibition.

“She has done an incredible job of capturing the essence of this small country town; using natural lighting and taking the opportunity to focus on everyday things and people,”she said.

“I spent an hour talking to Christina last week and her enthusiasm for Terang is infectious.“

With Frank and Jo Kenna as her guides she has immersed herself in to the community; a feat which normally takes about 40 years.

“I’m thrilled to hear Christina is planning to stay around a bit longer, and look at other local towns to photograph. We’re extremely fortunate to have someone of her artistic talent in our midst.”

Ms de Water said Commercial Hotel owner Les Cameron’s Artist Residency program had allowed her to immerse herself in the community and her photography to capture the essence of Terang.

“This has been an extraordinary journey for me to be able to take photographs seven days a week, every day and every night,” she said.

“I’m always chasing the light; I see a bit of fog, a bit of rain, a bit of anything and I’m out there. It’s what I love to do.

“Terang is such a different place than I have ever experienced in my whole life.

“It’s a country town that time has forgotten in a way, but it just keeps moving.”

The Postcards from Terang exhibition, located at the old Terang courthouse at 22 High Street, will remain open until April 29.

Ms de Water hopes to open the exhibition each day from 10am to 3pm.
