Exploring maths and science with the Cats
STUDENTS from Camperdown College’s junior campus took a trip to Geelong recently as part of a special science, maths and health program.
The program, BioCATS, is a partnership program between the Geelong Cats AFL team and BioLab which encourages students to use problem solving, statistical analysis and observational skills while also reinforcing the benefits of sport participation.
Year Five/Six students Henry Wilkinson and Knox Fleming attended the program last Monday, which was run at the Cats’ home ground of GMHBA Stadium.
Camperdown College junior campus assistant principal Jacinta Tolland said the program provided a hands-on learning experience combining sport, science and mathematics.
“Throughout the day, students explored the science behind a range of sports, including the AFL, through interactive activities at the Geelong Sports Museum,” she said.

“Highlights included a rowing challenge, knot-tying activities and designing and building structurally sound light towers using LEGO.
“The boys also enjoyed a unique behind-the-scenes tour of the home of the Geelong Cats, exploring areas such as the ground, change rooms and media spaces.
“This special STEM-focused experience provided students from across the region with the opportunity to connect with passionate sportsmen and women, while learning alongside peers and teachers from many different schools.
“It was a fantastic day of learning and connection.”
