The new mural, which Glenormiston artists Jess Fowler has painted on the side of the Josie Black Community Health Centre, was completed late last week.

The mural was designed to pay homage to the town’s history and agricultural connections while also hopefully catching the eye of tourists and encouraging them to stop and look around.

As Western District Newspapers reported last week, the mural was committed through the Terang Progress Association through funding allocated to sub-committee Terang Noorat Arts in the Avenue as part of bushfire recovery efforts.

Terang Noorat Arts in the Avenue committee member Des McKinnon said the mural had been everything the committee hoped for.

“I think it’s magnificent,” he said.

“It’s terrific – it filled the wall up, it’s got a bit of history and a bit of agriculture without being too much of anything.

“I think it’s quite fitting.”

The mural features a horse, cow and black cockatoo with insignia inspired by the signage of Montgomery and Bradshaw, a historic department store which operated from the site, bordering the design.

Mr McKinnon, who is also vice president of the Terang and District Historical Society, said part of the inspiration for the mural had been wanting to acknowledge the town’s history.

“It was triggered by the historical society’s interest in the fact the building had originally been Montgomery and Bradshaw, which dates back to the 1860s,” he said.

“That’s how it started and so, to make it work, the mural featured design elements inspired by the old storefront.

“So the process of bringing the mural to life started with the historical society, which was carried through to Terang Noorat Arts in the Avenue for funding.

“It’s an art project acknowledging the history of our community.”
