Faithful to walk Stations of the Cross
RESIDENTS are being invited to join Camperdown’s churches for a walk through town to mark Good Friday.

The walk, known as the Stations of the Cross, will see churchgoers from Camperdown’s three denominations coming together to commemorate the crucifixion and subsequent resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Father George Kuruvila, who is organising the two stations of the cross walks in Camperdown and Terang, said he felt it was important to emphasise the ecumenical nature of the event.
“It was solely started by Catholics in the beginning and later it was shared by everyone,” he said.
“It reflects the ecumenical spirit we have here in the region, as well as in many parts of the world.
“It shows Catholics aren’t on one side, Presbyterians on another side, Anglicans on a third side and the Uniting Church on the fourth side – instead, everyone is in the same boat for these litigious celebrations.
“A few stations will be led by the Anglicans, some by the Catholics and others led by the Uniting Church.
“If any denomination joins us, we’ll be happy to offer them a station.”
The Stations of the Cross will begin at the Camperdown Post Office at 190-192 Manifold Street from 10am with a reading led by Anglican Reverend Matthew Jones.
“We then go to the Camperdown clocktower, walk down the elm trees in Manifold Street to the War Memorial and then turn at the Commercial Hotel to walk to the Uniting Church,” he said.
“That will be the 14th station.
“After finishing, the Uniting Church will be inviting participants for morning tea.
“All three churches which are participating now have their roles in organising and leading the Stations of the Cross.”
Fr Kuruvila said he encouraged everyone to come along but understood the ageing population of churchgoers in the region.
“Last year there were around 70 people attending,” he said.
“This year, I hope for around 100 people. I believe that would be a good level of participation.
“I feel the theme for this year should be for peace in the world, especially with the situation in the Middle East and the people suffering during this time.”
